Fear is the great motivator? I thought it was anger.
Well, anger is a good one, but what's behind the anger?
In the mid-80's when AIDS was a crisis and people were dying (yeah, like they're not now, duh!) the Gay Community got angry.
Really angry.
HIV+ people and their supporters formed ACT-UP and showed the drug companies and the government how motivated and disruptive angry people can be.
HIV- people and their supporters got angry too and formed Queer Nation and showed straight society how angry they could be.
All of that anger was completely justified. Absolutely.
But what's behind the anger?
Fear of persecution, fear of not mattering, fear of dying without anyone giving a damn?
Fear of not being able or allowed to make a difference.
We looked at all of those fears and fought back. No fucking way are we taking this shit lying down!
Fear manifests itself as anger sometimes. Sometimes the anger is justified, but sometimes it's a shield for the tender little emotion that's hiding right behind it.
