The Cats

vs.

The Dog

Butch and Mary (yes, those are their names) have been with me since 1990, though thick and through thin.

They are more dog-like than my dog---they know their names and come when called.

I will refrain from describing all of their antics and idiosyncrasies. Suffice it to say that they add a certain amount of calm to my house. Before Cody came along and Mr. Bud moved in, I never came home to an empty house. There were cats demanding attention everywhere I went.

Now that Cody is here, things are a little different. I knew that adding a dog would require a period of adjustment, but we're going on a year now and the house is just now settling down.

Actually, the house is pretty calm now, because the kitties are staying with Uncle Dave for the next month. Everybody is getting a vacation.

Basenjis are bred to chase little furry things, which made life for the cats a little less serene. A trip to the water bowl or cat box was an Indiana Jones adventure -- they never knew what was lurking around the corner.

So, for the next month at least, they can rest easily.

Our Basenji, Cody, has been with us since April 1996, when we got him at 14 weeks. His full name from the breeder is Sherwood's Code Red.

Look at him. He looks innocent, doesn't he? Ha! Cody is the quintessential demon dog. Basenjis are relentless chewers and the breed is known for being aloof, which can make obedience a challenge.

Before Bud, I didn't want commitment in my life. Cats are great if you want to leave your pets for a few days or a week (if you don't mind coming home to find every magazine and pen you own on the floor).

This dog has grounded me. We go places together. I've learned that commitment has its rewards.

Now that he's no longer a puppy and we've grown to understand each other, we're spending some great time together running and playing in Piedmont Park. (Pictures as soon as I get some.)
